Lake McKenzie

Fraser Island is a holiday destination without equal. Is a place where you can bring your family and your own four wheel drive on a camping trip or you can come and stay in a beautiful resort with sensational architecture. You can come for a day tour, or if you like you can buy a house and live here for the rest of your life. Fraser Island is one of the most special eco systems on the east coast of Australia. This is the world’s largest sand island and the scenery here is absolutely awesome. Its aboriginal name is K’Gari which means paradise and they knew what they were talking about. Fraser Island had a large permanent Aboriginal population when Europeans first settled in Australia as it was the ideal place for hunting and gathering food and seafood especially was plentiful, as it still is today. Fraser island can be accessed by vehicle barge from Hervey Bay on the mainland.

Maheno Shipwreck

Over the recent decades, Fraser Island has been devastated by both sand mining and logging. Both of these practices have ceased and the island is now regenerating back to its natural state. Almost all of the island is National Park and the entire Great Sandy Region is world heritage listed. The island is an enigma. It is the only place in the world where rainforests grow in sand and it has the largest perched and mirror lakes in the world. Some of these are nothing short of magnificent. Lake Mackenzie is featured on almost every travel brochure for Fraser Island as is Central Station and the Woongoolba creek rainforest and boardwalk. The timber that grows on Fraser Island is unique and was in great demand. The Satinay tree is a particularly large member of the eucalypt family and it has the hardest timber of any species in the world. It is resistant to marine worms and was in great demand for piling and wharves for this reason. The advent of these structures being built from concrete has circumvented this demand. It is interesting to note that the entire Suez Canal was lined with Satinay timber cut from Fraser Island.

Many tours come to Fraser Island bringing both international and local tourist to see the island. Many stay overnight in resorts or backpacker accommodation. As there are no roads on the island all vehicles are four wheel drive and use the sand tracks originally built by the loggers and sand miners. The ocean beach is the main thoroughfare. Some of the most visited beauty spots on the island include Lake Mac Kenzie, Central Station, Lake Garrawongeera, Lake Wabby, Eli Creek, The Maheno shipwreck, The Coloured sands, Indian head and the Yidney Scrub rainforest. In the far north of the island are the Champagne Pools, Sandy Cape and the Sandy Cape Lighthouse.

This very special place should be on everyone’s travel itinerary so come and see Fraser Island when you are travelling through Australia.
