Spirit of Hervey Bay

The Hervey Bay whale watching industry has been running for over twenty years and in that time the population of humpback whales on Australia’s East coast has increased from around two thousand animals to over ten thousand. Hervey bay is a special place to see whales. It is the only place in the world where you can take a commercial whale watching trip in calm waters, without having to go onto the open ocean. This makes your whale watching experience so much better as you don’t get seasick and the whales are more inquisitive about their surroundings.

The hervey bay whale watching industry started when a local fishing charter operator regularly began seeing whales in the bay and some of them started to approach his boat. His fishing customers were so excited that he decided to run stand alone whale watching trips to see if there was a market. The word got around and within one year he was joined by several other boats and the industry was born. Today, there are twelve modern boats in the Hervey Bay whale watching fleet and they are carrying over 60000 passengers each year. It is now pretty obvious that watching whales is a much more productive and economically viable that killing and eating them.

They all operate from the Urangan boat harbour and Hervey Bay has plenty of new resort style accommodation to stay in. much of it is at the boat harbour itself so it is really convenient if you are going out to see the whales. There are packages that include accommodation and whale watching and there are also supertickets that will save you money on a combined Fraser Island tour/ Whale watching tour.
